PC220 vs PC400: Choosing the Right Excavator for Your Dubai Site
How to match 22-ton and 40-ton class excavators to excavation, demolition and civil works in the UAE.
The 22-ton class advantage
The Komatsu PC220 is the workhorse of UAE civil works — light enough to move between sites on a single low-bed, powerful enough to handle trenching, foundations and general excavation. For most contractors renting excavators in Dubai, the PC220 is the default choice for jobs under 6 metres deep.
When to step up to the PC400
The 40-ton PC400 comes into its own on bulk excavation, heavy breaker work and demolition support. Its higher auxiliary hydraulic flow lets it run larger breakers and pulverizers without cycle-time penalties, and the reinforced boom and stick handle continuous demolition duty that would shorten the life of a 22-ton machine.
Cost, mobilisation and site fit
PC400 hire rates run roughly 60–80% higher than PC220, and mobilisation requires a heavier trailer. On tight urban sites in Dubai, the PC220 often wins on manoeuvrability even where output looks marginal on paper. On mass earthworks and demolition packages, the PC400 pays back through fewer machine-hours.
